A fresh consignment of salt pilchards in wooden caks heads off to Italy from British Cured Pilchards. Sadly the Pilchard Works museum celebrating what was a major Cornish industry closed in October 2005.

Health regualtions insisted that wood was out and plastic in - untill the owner proved that the heavily salted fish would not keep in plastic! Bit like the demise of wooden boxes, as it seems that bacteria thrive on plastic fish boxes where they won't on wooden ones!
