Having broken down with gearbox trouble in a worsening forecast, the Defiant (skipper/owner Watty Andrews) picks up a tow from the Fern, well South of Mounts Bay. Despite the distance off, the flash from the camera was seen by the coastguard lookout (in the days of such things) at Gwennap Head . Today, the National Coastwatch Institution, manned by volunteers, provides this vitally important visual lookout around our coast. The Defiant was lost several years later in the Bristol Channel, all hands safely returned.
